When You Have Nothing to Lose: The Fin Lesson

On 15 June 2026, Salesforce signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fin - the company the world knew for fifteen years as Intercom, for approximately $3.6 billion. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, subject to regulatory clearance. For an Irish-founded business exit, it ranks up there with the best of them. I have been watching this company for a couple of years, since its CEO Eoghan McCabe stood in front of the market and told it, plainly, that he was going to take a successful SaaS business and bet it on artificial intelligence. He was compelling. He was clear. And oh, was he right! Hats off to everyone involved. This is what it looks like when a bold strategy is executed without flinching. It is one thing to have the strategy but the execution was sublime! This was not a comfortable company executing a clean plan. It is tempting to file Fin under “in search of excellence” — a great company doing great things. McCabe himself tells a harder story, and it is the more useful one. “You could say we were brave, but the truth is we had nothing to lose and no other choice.”
