Irish business advisor since 1995

Founder, Business Answers

Thirty years in the room with Irish owner-managers, on growth, on price, and on the sale of the business itself. Roughly 90% of his clients over the last decade found him through someone else's recommendation, not a marketing campaign.

I started advising Irish business owners in 1995. Since then I have worked with over 200 companies, from one-person practices to large trading businesses. The work is always the same shape: find the three or four things actually holding the business back, fix them in the right order, and build an owner who can lead rather than carry the whole thing.

Roughly 95% of those engagements reached a good outcome. A few did not. Sometimes the market moved, sometimes the owner did not want to change what needed changing, and once or twice I was the wrong advisor for the business. I would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise, because it is the same honesty you get from me in the room.

For the last twenty years a large part of the work has been on the sale of private companies: getting a business ready, understanding what buyers actually pay for, and walking owners through a process that is far more demanding than most expect.

Almost all new clients now arrive through referral, or through a related business valuation tool owners use when they start thinking about their number. There is no outbound marketing machine behind this. Owners who have worked with me send other owners, and that has been enough for three decades.

Two live working sessions run each year for owners who want the thinking without a full engagement: Scaling Up and Selling Up. One-off coaching sessions are available for specific problems.

What owners say

Recommendations written on LinkedIn by people Tommy has worked for and with.

Brave enough to say what nobody else in the room is willing to say.

Tommy is an indispensable business advisor. He brings a refreshing no-nonsense approach and is brave enough to say what nobody else in the room is willing to say, but could be the most important thing that needs to be said. He can instantly move from a broad, macro approach on sales and marketing strategy, to giving excellent guidance on the nitty gritty and spotting a small, but critical detail on a financial report. Before working with Tommy a friend said to me, if you don't have Tommy advising your business, you're losing out. He is highly insightful and has an ability to quickly get to the crux of the issue. Very highly recommended. The proof is in the pudding and Tommy was instrumental in helping to more than double the level of business.

A real knack for seeing to the heart of an issue.

Tommy has a real knack for seeing to the heart of an issue and for helping the teams he works with arrive at solutions they may never have otherwise considered. He is an absolute pleasure to work with and if you get the chance to do so, you should jump at it!

Notes from clients

Sent to Tommy directly by owners he has worked with. Names withheld at their request.

Tommy was recommended to me by a fellow catering professional. At the time I was working in a separate business as I had become a little tired of my business and needed some help. Tommy breezed through the place, gave me deadlines, spotted oddities in the kitchen and essentially transformed my business into a more profitable and smooth-running operation. His help was invaluable and really put me back on track. I also felt I could call him anytime for further guidance. Even if a business didn't need help, Tommy's general audit of a catering business is considered, knowledged and very pertinent. He also helped me out with negotiations regarding the terms of my lease and other issues. I would have no hesitation recommending him knowing he will certainly give very valuable advice.

Owner, restaurant and catering business

Dublin

Selling your business can be very stressful and Tommy was able to guide me through the process and point out the areas that were important over the ones that can seem important. He maximised what I was able to get for my business and his knowledge of the process was imperative. Anyone selling their business needs someone with Tommy's background and I would highly recommend him.
